EU can no longer rely on the US - Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
German Chancellor is confident that Germany and the European Union should take more responsibility. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump that the times when Germany and Europe could rely entirely on the all-powerful partner in the person of the States have passed and now they must take more responsibility, Ukrinform reports. "The time of the post-war order, which lasted more than 70 years after the war, passed," the chancellor said.
According to her, Europeans can not afford to rely on the fact that when conflicts occur at their doorstep, someone else will appear and save.
"We must contribute, and this contribution should grow in the coming years," Merkel said and explained that this applies to military participation, and the tasks of providing assistance for the development of other countries, and to combat the causes of migration.
She also pointed out Germany "must learn to play its role."
"Germany is a large and economically powerful country, but in the military and political spheres it still has much to do," the chancellor admitted.
At the same time she noted the extreme importance of transatlantic relations and a reliable partnership between the European Union and the United States, including NATO.
Earlier, Merkel had already stated that Europeans should learn to rely more on their own strengths.
Later this idea was supported by the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, stressing that Europe should be aware of its responsibility, since it is no longer possible to rely on the US as before.
